Time: Preparation time: 20 minutes | Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
– 1 cup jelly (any favorite flavor)
– 2 cups sugar
– 1 cup corn syrup
– 1/2 cup chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts)
– 2 large egg whites
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
1. Begin by greasing a square baking pan (about 9 x 9 inches) and lining it with parchment paper for easy removal later.
2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and corn syrup over medium heat. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture starts to bubble.
3. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form. This will add a fluffy texture to your nougat.
4. Once the syrup is bubbling, carefully drizzle it into the whipped egg whites while mixing on low speed. Be cautious, as the syrup is very hot!
5. Continue to mix until well combined, then add in the vanilla extract, salt, and chopped nuts. Stir until evenly distributed.
6. Pour the nougat mixture into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Let it cool for about 30 minutes.
7. Once cool, spread your chosen jelly over the top of the nougat layer. You can create swirls for a fun look.
8. Refrigerate for another 1 to 2 hours until firm. Once set, dust the top with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
9. Cut into squares or bars and serve as delightful nostalgic treats to share with friends and family.
